The Lottery Scam
The lottery scam is another popular fraud that has been around for a while that still to this day works on a small amount of naive victims. Basically a victim will receive an email stating that they have one the lottery and their prize is ready to collect. However before you can collect the winnings, you need to send the sanctioning organization some “fees” to process your lottery winnings.
Of course there is no lottery jackpot and obviously once you send the money you’ll never hear from these people again, however this scam still cons gullible victims out of thousands of dollars every year and remains one of the internet’s most popular frauds.
Sample Of Lottery Scam Email
The lottery scam is not however limited to just email solicitation. Many of the con-artists pushing the lottery scams also contact unsuspecting victims by phone as well. Typically they will pose as employees from a sweepstakes company and inform them that they have won a contest or drawing of some sort, and then all they need to do to receive the winnings is send in a fee to process the money. Typically victims of the scam will be senior citizens, though younger victims have been reported as well.
Probably the most notorious of these lottery phone scams is the “Jamaican Lottery Scam” where the con-artists are based in Jamaica.
Just like the Nigerian 419 scam, as long as there are victims who are able to be fooled it looks like the scam is here to stay. At the end of the day, for these con-artists it’s all about the numbers game. As long as there are victims willing to hand over their hard earned money, these scams will continue to thrive and these criminals won’t stop.
