The Best Car Research Websites

truecar
May 8th, 2015

Instead of going to a dealership for a new car or checking various used car sellers, you can now find what you want by doing your research on the internet. The Digital Age has, in more ways than one, revolutionized most industries, and the automobile sales market is no exception. You can now browse endless inventories of brand new or used cars online in the comfort of your home.

Auto sales websites, which were once filled with mostly motoring advice and customer reviews, have now become more informative. These websites connect potential buyers with car dealers and offer instant guarantees on prices. Some sites even allow prospective customers to send in their online credit applications, estimate values for trading in their current vehicles, see what other customers paid, and even configure their vehicles.

Here’s a list of the best sources of car info online. Check out their offers and pick your choices. Local dealers are usually listed on these sites and you can request for quotes and compare it with manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP). Make a shortlist of the sites which have your car you are thinking of buying, narrow them down to four or five, and start going over the websites for pricing information.

TrueCar.com

This is a free online service that provides trustworthy estimates for a dealer’s actual costs to potential car buyers. This site also gives viewers price offers which have been guaranteed by several dealerships. According to The New York Times, some dealerships have felt threatened by the presence of TrueCar and some have even complained that what this site is doing is illegal.

A dealership can choose to pay TrueCar a subscription fee each month or opt to pay the flat fee of $299 for every car it sells from a customer lead. There is no upfront payment to use TrueCar. It gathers data, invites a dealership to deliver guaranteed quotes exclusive of title fees, taxes, and other charges, and price estimates including options that are good, better, and best for the car in question.

Edmunds.com

Edmunds started as a guide for car prices. Today, Edmunds.com is virtually a treasure throve of information with a database of both regional and regional incentives and rebates, inventory and dealer listings, vehicle test driving reviews, prices for used and new vehicles, and an extensive collection of advice and tips on all the aspects of vehicle purchase and ownership.

The site provides viewers with data using its very own True Market Value tools, the New Vehicle Calculator and the Used Vehicle Appraiser. The former gives a current estimate of the average price a consumer will pay when buying a new vehicle. The latter provides an estimate of an actual or current transaction price for used cars that are either bought or sold by private parties and dealers.

Carvana.com

The only difference between buying a car from Carvana.com and ordering pizza from a restaurant is that the car you buy from the website will be delivered in 2 days. But unlike Pizza Hut, they give you a financing option. Carvana.com uses a point-and-click system with delivery and deals exclusively in used cars without salesmen, a showroom or bad coffee.

A buyer takes an online virtual tour where any scratch, scuff or ding is flagged. The buyer can purchase the car and avail financing through Carvana, tack on the warranty, and have a delivery time scheduled. On average, it saves a buyer around four hours and about $1,500 in monetary value when they buy a car from Carvana. Moreover, a return window of seven days is given to the customer instead of a test drive.
